C. R. Savage, Photographer - Art Bazar
(Salt Lake City, Utah)
C.R. (Charles
Roscoe) Savage, 1832-1909 C.R. Savage was not only a well known photographer in Utah, but across the early west
as well. Landscape and portrait photography were his specialty. Born in England where he first learned the skills of a photographer,
Savage emigrated to Utah in 1860 after joining the Mormon church. Upon his arrival in Salt Lake City he made business arrangements
with Marsena Cannon, an established daguerreotype photographer with a studio on East Temple (Present day State Street).
In 1862, with Cannon's
departure to St. George, Utah, Savage formed a partnership with George Martin Ottinger. When that partnership disolved in
1870, Savage formed the Pioneer Art Gallery. In 1875, the gallery expanded and the name was changed to the "Art Bazar".
On 26 June 1883, his Art Bazar burned to the ground. The fire consumed the building, but more tragically, all of his
negatives to that date.
After his death in February 1909, another fire, in 1911, destroyed all of the negatives created
since the first fire 28 years earlier. His sons continued to operate the business for another 15 years, doing studio portraits
as well as making negatives from previous prints created by their father, then re-issuing the images. The Art Bazar closed
forever the last day of December 1926.
The statement below dates from 1886, just three years after the first fire.
