Becker Brewing Company, (Ogden, Utah)
The Becker Brewing Company of Odgen, Utah is
one of the greatest hoards of early Utah ephemera or collectable paper ever discovered. You cannot visit an antique store
in the state or search the internet without coming across someone who has checks, letterhead, receipts or other Becker material
offered for sale. For collectors, this is a great thing.
Like today, where you can find this material everywhere, back in the day, there was not a city, town, hamlet,
mining camp, or wide spot in the road, that did not buy beer and other beverages from Becker. The other thing that Becker
as a company was good at, is keeping records. Tens of thousands of them. Just a few are here.
All but one are drawn on accounts with the Ogden State Bank. Arranged in date order
from the 1890's to the 1920's, they show a variety of styles, images, and colors.

Denver
& Rio Grande Railroad Co.
The Denver & Rio Grande Railroad was one
of the major railroads that operated in the State of Utah. Serving the mining camps as well as the big cities, the coming
of the railroads was a boon to both. Bringing goods from other parts of the country in greater quantity and lower prices than
ever before, they also allowed the shipment of lesser grade ores for milling and smelting at profit, where before, such product
would be left on the waste dumps. Mines in remote locations benefited too from these lower shipping costs, shortening the
wagon haul that once prevented even high grade ore from ever leaving the claim. Though never issued this check was printed
around 1910 or so, the heyday of the D&RG activity in the mining camps.
This first check, #16510, is not identified as to the printer, but it is drawn on an account
of Walker Brothers Bank, Salt Lake City, Utah. The check has black and red printing on pale green paper stock.

New Park Mining Company
The New Park Mining Company was one of the large consolidation companies
that would bring together a number of old Park City District operations and work them all under one name. This Timekeepers
Statement slip #1400 was used to track pay due, deductions, and where the slip could be redeemed. This slip, from the 1940's
was never issued.
The slip is printed in triplicate, with two white copies and one yellow copy. The check is printed with black
and red ink, on plain paper stock.
This next image is a completed time slip of the same style. This slip,
#656 was issued May 28, 1943 to Waldo G Johnson for $23.83. The slip was payable only at the Anderson Implement & Hardware
Company. The slip is signed by company officer George W. Barker.
This
next item is a check from the New Park Mining Company, Keetley, Utah, issued to A.R. Turnbow, dated February 25, 1952. It
is drawn on an account with First Security Bank of Utah N.A.. The Check is printed with black and red ink on Green embossed
security paper.
This second check from the same company is from a later period in time, issued in 1959, the check
now shows company offices in Park City, Utah. The check is issued for $97.88 to the Nevada Industrial Commission, Carson City,
Nevada. The check is also drawn on the First Security account, and is printed on the same style but different color safety
paper.
This third check is similar to the second one in size
and format, but different in color. It dates from 1941.
New Quincy Mining Company
The
New Quincy Mining Company was located in the Park City District in the Wasatch Mountains east of the Salt Lake Valley. This
check, #940, was issued to the Agnes Farnsworth County Treasurer, December 12, 1931. The check was issued to the Summit County
Treasurer to pay the years property taxes. The check is drawn on an account of The Walker Brothers Bankers, Salt Lake City,
Utah. The check has black printing on pale pink patterned and embossed watermarked paper. The printing also features
an image of the Walker Brother Bank Building in downtown Salt Lake City.
Below
the check is an image of the very property tax notice for which the check was issued. The notice is issued to Simon Bamburger
and Solon Spiro, the registered owners of the property. The notice lists 97+ acres of mining claim property valued at $481.00,
Machinery valued at $1000.00, Improvements valued at $2300.00, and Supplies and Personal Property valued at $50.00. All this
totaling $3831.00, and the total tax due on that amount, $90.03. Please note that the tax was due by November 31, 1931, yet
the check was not issued until 12 days later. I wonder if they had to pay that 3% late fee as stated on the notice? If so,
then that payment must have been made with another check as it is not reflected on this one.

Oddfellows,
International Order Of - (I.O.O.F.)
The International Order Of the Oddfellows (I.O.O.F.)
was just one fraternal organization that made its way into the many mining camps of Utah. Like the Elks, Moose, Masons, Knights
of Pythias, and such, each organization had their own unique ceremonies. In the larger mining camps, it was not unusual for
these groups to build their own lodges or meeting buildings. It was also common practice for fraternal organizations to have
officers, a treasury, and an account with the local bank.
Here we have a sample check, #97, from just such an account. This one form the Unity Encampment #2, I.O.O.F.,
Salt Lake City. This check is simple lacking a herald or image, but does have a nice graphic pattern about the border. The
check was printed by Kelly & Company, Printers, Salt Lake. This sample dates from the 1890's.
Ogden
- Lucin Copper Company (Ogden, Utah)
Ogden
State Bank (Ogden, Utah)
I don't have a lot of information about the
Ogden State Bank, other than it was a successor of the Citizens Bank of Ogden in 1893, and it failed in the mid 1920's causing
quite a financial hit to Ogden and other northern Utah cities. What I do have, are a number of different samples of checks
dating from the 1890's. (More information will be given about the company on it's own page in the future.)
This check was issued for 25.00 to S.S. Schruman Esq.? It is signed by G. L. Becker? The check was printed by the Salt
Lake Litho Co. with the Citizens Bank herald at left. simple black ink on pale yellow paper. The check dates from the 1893.
This second sample is also from the early days
of transition from First National Bank to Ogden State Bank, as the name of the former has been lined out and replaced. This
check is issued for $5.00 to Browning Brothers. Famous gunmakers based in Ogden. The check is signed by G.L. Becker. The check
dates from 1895.

B.
H. Schettler Banker
B.H. Schettler, was a private banking firm located
in Salt Lake City, Utah that became famous and then infamous. Schettler began the private banking operation in the 1890's
and operated under "casual" circumstances. In 1904, a rumor began , and then a run. The vastly undercapitalized
bank collapsed. Schettler and the bank's reputations were both damaged. Below are samples of a Check, Deposit Slip, and Promissory
Note for the banking operation. They date from the the 1890's and the early 1900's and are all fine examples of the printers
art.

made its way into the THRP collection. Since it is a very nice looking document, and a fine example of the printer's art,
it seems fitting to include it here in our document gallery. This check, #1925, was issued to The Booth (?) Co., June 7, 1901,
for $16.00. The check is signed by Leslie W. Thayer and Fred C. Trautman. The check is drawn on an account of The First National

The check is signed by Marcus E.

It is interesting to note that the check was issued on the 11th of September, but not cashed
in until almost a month later on October 8th.

The T.R. Jones, Bankers Company was one of many
private banks operating in early Utah. It was based in Salt Lake City. I don't have a lot of information at this time, but
I do know that the bank ultimately failed. More information on this bank will be shared in the future. The check shown below
is drawn on an account with T.R. Jones for the Sunbeam Consolidated Mining Company, Tintic District.
Written December 22, 1896, the check is issued to William F. Colton, Cashier, for $1.88,
and is signed by E. L. Carpenter. The check itself was printed by the Utah Litho Company also based in Salt Lake City. It

certifying that he worked nine days as an engineer in the month of July 1909, at the rate of $3.75 per day. The gross amount
of the check is $33.75. After deducting $1.00 for the hospital fund, the net pay due to Mr. Riding $32.75.
This document is typical of the kind, and is very basic in design and printing. As previously
noted, the check dates from 1909.

The two checks
shown below have very distinctive and decorative name block printing. One check appears to be for regular operations, while
the other is clearly identified as "Labor Account". Neither check has been issued. Both checks are drawn on accounts
of McCornick & Company, Bankers, Salt Lake City, Utah. The check both have black and red printing on security embossed

can be seen on this page under the differend mining company names. But here we have something a little different, a Promissory
Note.
This note, dated February 23, 1922,
shows that George Jensen, lent $140.00 on that day, promised to repay that amount no later than April 1, 1922. Quite a sum
of money in those days. I cannot help but wonder what it was for.

Wells
Fargo & Co.
Wells Fargo & Co., one of the best known
companies formed in the old west. Famous even back the for transporting gold, silver and other precious metals, raw ore from
mine to mill, express material, bank notes, and cash. The company had offices all over the west, and moved millions of dollars
about the country.
In this case
we have a check or note #8529 from the Pioche, Nevada offices of Wells Fargo & Co. London, England. The check is dated
February 20, 1873 and is payable to B.F. Sides Agent, for Ten Pounds Sterling (Silver). The note is printed with black and
red ink on white paper. The note was printed by Lithographers, Britton & Rev., San Francisco, California.
This second Wells, Fargo & Company item
is a check from the Salt Lake City Banking House and is similar in style to other checks of the period. This one, issued to
E. Eyre ? for $62.00, and is dated May 6th, 1878. The check is preprinted with the gold 2 cent Internal Revenue Document stamp,
and is stamped as "PAID" almost a month later on June 4th.
This third and fourth sample are similar in
style and printing. Simple black printing with just a bit of fancy script for the Well's Fargo name line. The checks are also
printed with the diamond shape 2 cent document stamp printed in gold/orange ink under the black printing. Both are from the
San Francisco, California, and both are signed by John Potter. While only one is identified as such, it is probable that both
were printed by Bacon & Company print, San Francisco. Both samples date from 1880.
This fifth sample is from a later date than
the four previous, but still early in the life of the state. This check was written in 1898, just two years after utah became
a state. Note that the revenue stamp present on the earlier versions is not present on this check.
