business owners to promote mining, and a score of others early papers, all devoted to the news, and more importantly, mining

in Utah papers for years. This ad, from the Salt Lake Daily Tribune and Mining Gazette, dates from 1871.

Chalmers & Co. - Mining Machinery
Newspaper ad for Fraser, Chalmers & Company,
(Chicago, Illinois) suppliers of all manner of heavy mining machinery. Though simply illustrated, the ad clearly names the
wide variety of equipment offered by this company and the Liberty Iron Works that backed it. This ad, from the Salt Lake Daily
Herald, dates from April of 1874.

Iron Works - Engines & Smelting Furnaces
Newspaper ad for Richards Iron Works, Chicago,
Illinois. Manufacturer of mining machinery and equipment of all kinds. In the early days, Mr. Richards would travel to Utah
and take orders directly from his room at the Townsend House hotel in downtown Salt Lake City. This ad, from the Salt Lake
Daily Tribune and Mining Gazette, dates from 1871.

Victor
Rock Drill Co.
Newspaper ad for the Victor Rock Drill. This
hand powered drill, Patented in 1873, promised to cut labor for drilling a hole by 3/4. Not to sure how well that promise
was kept, but later versions of this style drill, powered by compressed air, would prove great labor saving devices. Victor
drills were used in Utah in several locations. This ad, from the Salt Lake Daily Tribune dates from 1879.
