Mineral Survey Plat
Below is a copy of the Mineral Survey Plat for the Thor Lode Mining
Claim, Big Cottonwood Mining District, Mineral District #5, Mineral Survey #29, Lot #65. Survey dated November 21 & 22,
1876 and accepted by the U.S. Surveyor's Office on December 22, 1876. The original claim was 600 feet wide, and 1500 feet
long, running roughly East to West and encompassing 20.66 acres of ground. and overlapping slightly the Venus claim to the
south.
The Plat shows
the discovery marker near the eastern third of the claim directly on top of the ridge. Though later work would create a tunnel
on the South Fork side of the ridge, at the time of the survey, the Venus Claim was being worked by three shafts just below
the ridge-line on the Mineral Fork side of the divide. The discovery shaft on the ridge 30 feet deep, the second shaft, an
incline 78 feet deep, and the third shaft, also a n incline, 55 feet deep. All three of these shafts being 4 feet x 5 feet
in width.
No mention is
made of cabins or structures at the site on the survey plat.
Base Plat is from original scans by the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management (BLM).
