Mineral Survey Plat

Below is a copy of the Mineral Survey Plat for the Reed & Benson Lode Mining Claim, Big Cottonwood Mining District, Mineral District #5, Mineral Survey #116, Lot #152. The Survey dated July 17, 1888, and accepted by the U.S. Surveyor's Office on July 1, 1889. Located nearly 20 years earlier on August 5, 1870, the property was worked vigorously from that time. The original claim was 200 feet wide, and 2600 feet long, running South South-West to North North-East and encompassing 11.937 acres of ground.

The Plat shows the discovery marker near the center of the claim just west of the Reed & Benson ridge. At the time of the survey, the Reed & Benson mine was being worked by a 300 foot incline shaft, 275 feet of winzes, and another 300 feet of tunnels and drifts. The exact dimensions and direction of any of these workings at the time of the survey is not given.

No mention is made of cabins or structures at the site on the survey plat, but it is known that a large bunk house, ore house and other buildings were on the property.
